How it works

  1. 1

    Plan the layout first

We walk through the space with you and talk through placement before anything is marked or cut. Downlight spacing, beam angle, and circuit grouping all affect the end result — getting this right costs nothing extra.

  2. 2

    Ceiling cut & cable run

We cut and run cabling through roof space where accessible. For double-brick or concrete, we discuss surface conduit options or alternative solutions before proceeding.

  3. 3

    Fittings installed & circuit connected

All fittings are connected and tested. For dimmer installations, we verify the LED fittings are dimmer-compatible — not all are, and mismatched dimmers cause flicker and shorten LED life.

  4. 4

    Full test & tidy

Every light is tested at full brightness and on dimmer (if applicable). Ceiling penetrations are sealed. We leave the space clean.

Common questions

How many LED downlights can go on one circuit?

Modern LED downlights use 5–12W each, so technically you can fit many on a single circuit — but we generally recommend grouping lights by zone or room so you can switch areas independently. For larger homes or open-plan spaces, we'll recommend the right circuit layout during the quote.

How much do LED downlights cost to install in Perth?

LED downlight installation typically costs $50–$120 per light point, depending on roof access and whether new cabling is needed. Replacing existing halogen fittings in accessible roofspace is at the lower end; new circuit runs in double-brick homes are higher.

Can I use a dimmer with any LED light?

No — this is one of the most common mistakes. Many LED downlights are not dimmer-compatible, and connecting them to a standard dimmer causes flickering, buzzing, or premature failure. We only install dimmable LEDs with matched, compatible dimmer switches.

Do I need an electrician to change a light fitting?

In WA, any work that involves connecting or disconnecting wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. This includes replacing light fittings that are hardwired. You can replace a bayonet or screw-in globe yourself, but swapping a fitting requires a sparky.

How long does downlight installation take?

Replacing 10 halogen downlights with LEDs in an accessible roof space typically takes 2–4 hours. Installing new downlights on a new circuit takes longer depending on cable runs. We'll give you a time estimate when we quote.

What colour temperature should I choose for downlights?

Warm white (2700–3000K) suits bedrooms, living areas, and anywhere you want a relaxed feel. Cool white (4000K) works well in kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices where task lighting matters. Daylight (5000–6500K) is typically used in garages or workshops. We can show you samples if you're unsure.

Why Sparky Local?

We help you plan the layout before we start cutting — because moving downlights after the fact is expensive. All LEDs we supply are Australian standard compliant, fire-rated where required, and dimmer-compatible when dimmers are part of the job.
