How it works

  1. 1

Compliance check — what does your property need?

Requirements differ depending on whether your home was built before or after 1997, and whether it's being sold, rented, or owner-occupied. We assess your property and tell you exactly what's needed before quoting.

  2. 2

Correct alarm type & placement confirmed

WA requires photoelectric alarms (not ionisation). Placement must meet AS 3786 — specific positions in bedrooms, hallways, and living areas. We don't just fit alarms anywhere; we put them where the standard requires.

  3. 3

    Alarms installed & interconnection tested

All alarms are installed and interconnected — either hardwired or via approved RF wireless link. We test that every alarm triggers when any one alarm activates.

  4. 4

    Compliance certificate issued

We issue a written compliance certificate confirming the installation meets WA requirements. This is required for settlement of property sales and rental compliance.

Common questions

What type of smoke alarm does WA require?

Western Australia requires photoelectric smoke alarms — not ionisation type. Photoelectric alarms are better at detecting slow, smouldering fires (the most common type in homes). Ionisation alarms, which were common in older homes, are no longer compliant for new installations.

Do I need hardwired or battery smoke alarms?

It depends on when your home was built. Homes built after 1 January 1997 generally require mains-powered (hardwired) alarms with battery backup. Homes built before that date can use long-life (10-year) sealed lithium battery alarms. Rental properties and homes for sale must meet the current standard regardless of age.

Do smoke alarms need to be interconnected?

Yes — WA requires smoke alarms to be interconnected so that when one triggers, all alarms in the home sound. This can be done via hardwired interconnection or approved RF wireless systems. Single standalone alarms are not compliant for most residential properties.

I'm selling my home — do I need a smoke alarm compliance certificate?

Yes. WA law requires sellers to ensure the property has compliant smoke alarms at the time of settlement. Many conveyancers will ask for a compliance certificate. We provide this as part of our installation service.

I'm a landlord — what are my obligations?

Rental properties in WA must have compliant smoke alarms installed before a new tenancy or tenancy renewal. The alarms must be tested at the start of each tenancy. Landlords are responsible for maintenance and replacement.

How often do smoke alarms need to be replaced?

Smoke alarms have a 10-year lifespan. The manufacture date is printed on the back of the alarm. Alarms older than 10 years must be replaced — they degrade and become unreliable regardless of whether the test button works.

Why Sparky Local?
