Solar-Ready Switchboard Upgrades — Southern Perth

Most Perth homes have an existing switchboard that wasn't designed for solar. Before your panels go on the roof, your board needs the right isolators, metering connections, and circuit capacity to handle the new load safely and meet Western Power requirements. Sparky Local prepares switchboards for solar — and for battery storage and EV charging too — so your whole energy system integrates cleanly from day one.

What we handle:

  • Solar inverter isolator supply & installation
  • Bi-directional metering connection preparation
  • Solar-ready RCBO and switchboard circuit configuration
  • Battery-ready circuit additions for future battery storage
  • EV charger circuit roughed in during solar prep (saves a return visit)
  • Western Power CT meter and grid protection assessment
  • Switchboard upgrade if existing board is undersized or unsafe
  • Certificate of Electrical Compliance

How it works

  1. 1

    Pre-solar switchboard assessment

We inspect your existing switchboard and identify what's needed before your solar installer arrives. We look at spare circuit capacity, mains cable condition, and whether the board is ready for the isolator and AC connection your inverter needs.

  2. 2

    Isolator and protection device installation

A dedicated AC isolator is installed adjacent to the inverter connection point. We also add any required AC overcurrent protection and confirm the board layout meets AS/NZS 3000 and your inverter manufacturer's requirements.

  3. 3

Battery and EV circuit roughing-in (optional)

If you're planning battery storage or an EV charger in the next 1–3 years, we can rough in the conduit and circuit now — saving the cost of a second mobilisation later. Capped and ready to connect when you're ready.

  4. 4

    Western Power notification and certificate

We submit the required Western Power connection notification and issue your Certificate of Electrical Compliance. This must happen before your solar system can be energised.

Common questions

Does my switchboard need to be upgraded before I can get solar?

Not always — but many older homes do need modifications. Any switchboard with ceramic fuses needs upgrading before solar is connected. Even modern boards may need spare breaker slots, isolator positions, or mains cable capacity checks. We assess this during quoting.

What is a solar isolator and why do I need one?

A solar AC isolator is a switch that allows the solar inverter to be safely disconnected from the grid without going to the main switchboard. It's a legal requirement for all grid-connected solar systems in WA and must be installed by a licensed electrician.

How much does a solar-ready switchboard upgrade cost?

A basic solar prep (isolator, circuit, compliance certificate) on a modern board typically costs $400–$800. If a full switchboard replacement is needed first, expect $1,200–$2,500 depending on the number of circuits. We provide a fixed quote before starting any work.

Can I get a battery added later if I only do solar now?

Yes — but you'll save money if you rough in the battery circuit now while we're already working on the switchboard. We can install the conduit and reserve a circuit position for your future battery at minimal extra cost. Ask us to include this in your quote.

Who handles the Western Power notification — me or the electrician?

We handle it. All Western Power notifications for new solar connections, metering changes, and grid protection requirements are submitted by us as part of the job. You don't need to contact Western Power separately.
